UGR medical lecturer Jose Rico Irles believes this low concentration of β-EP determines whether a person will become an addict. According to scientists from the university of Granada, although many factors, such as social, family, environmental and genetic factors, can lead to a person becoming an addict, scientists have found that the lack of a key substance -- β-EP -- is inherited, and therefore there is a genetic reason for becoming an addict.
About 200 families in the spanish-speaking province of southern Granada participated in the study. At least one of these families has a perennial alcoholic parent. As a result, children born to these families showed lower levels of β-EP than their peers between 6 months and 10 years of age. "When both parents were heavy drinkers, their progeny had lower levels of beta-β-EP," the scientists said. Although alcohol consumption affects different people in different ways, lower concentrations of beta-β-EP do make people more susceptible to alcohol and thus more likely to become addicted to it. Scientists say the β-EP will be a molecular marker for people at high risk of alcohol abuse. "to prevent people from becoming addicts, you have to consider and identify genetic predisposition," Rico said. Action must be taken against children and adolescents before they are exposed to alcohol. This is important to prevent alcoholism, scientists warn, because alcohol is an irreversible drug at some point.
